THE MYERS HOUSE - NORTH CAROLINA - ABOUT

Welcome to the boogeyman's home away from home. The Myers House - North Carolina is a life-size replica of the infamous Michael Myers house from John Carpenter's classic horror film HALLOWEEN. The house is located in Orange County NC in rural Hillsborough and is the personal residence of Kenny Caperton, Emily Currier and their two cats Loki and Siva.

Owner Kenny Caperton has been fascinated with all things Halloween since he was a little kid and grew up watching the 80's slasher flicks on late night cable television, but the blank pale face of serial killer Michael Myers stuck with him the most. At 29 years old, Kenny's favorite film is still the original 1978 HALLOWEEN and he was at the point in his life were he was ready to stop paying rent and wanted to find a place of his own without the meddling annoyance of landlords. So for a lifelong fan of the Halloween series, visiting the original Myers House (yes, it's still standing!) in South Pasadena, California during the process of house-hunting can give you crazy ideas. So crazy they just might work …that is how the Myers House NC came to be. So what could have been just another cookie cutter starter home for a young couple became a one-of-a-kind, life-sized tribute to a classic horror movie.

But making this terrifying dream come true didn't come easy - the process was not without its obstacles and delays. The first stumbling blocks Kenny and Emily encountered were not having any blueprints for the original house, not owning any land, and not having any real idea of how much a project like this would cost. Even though there is a potentially overwhelming amount of thought and prep work necessary to build a custom house, the couple were determined to make their dream come true and tackled each issue one by one: things like designing the layout and floor plan of the house themselves on a sheet of paper, finding an architect to create the building plans (none exist for the original), hunting down a good piece of land, finding a local builder that was willing to take on the project, getting financing, picking out every single material to be used in the construction of the house …the list goes on and on. But after many months of hard work and bloodshed, The Myers House NC was completed in March 2009, and can now be found looming eerily in the Hillsborough countryside.

As much as Kenny wanted to build the house as close to the original as possible, he and Emily realized early on that the interior spaces of the original house, which was built in 1888, were not practical for the place they would be living in for, most likely, their whole lives. So the NC version of the Myers House was designed to look as close as possible to the original house from the outside front and side views, but the interior and back of the house were intentionally altered to be livable by their vision and by modern standards. So the inside got a few extra bathrooms, bigger bedrooms and other interior alterations, but the important elements from the movie - Judith's room, the staircase and the basic locations of the kitchen, dining room and living room, are in the same places.

Another noteworthy difference between the North Carolina house and the original worth pointing out to HALLOWEEN fans involves the exterior setting of the house and the interior décor. The NC house was built on over 5 acres of old farmland out in the country - sprawling hills and trees for miles. It would have been extremely hard, if not impossible to recreate the suburban Midwest feel of Haddonfield, IL for the replica house, simply because of all of the building codes and neighborhood restrictions now in place that weren't an issue in the past. While the house's setting might not duplicate the neighborhood the original house appears in, the rural setting has its own spooky charm and adds a unique twist on a house so many people are used to seeing in suburbia. Imagine Michael Myers attacking you and having no neighbors to run to! As far as the interior decorating, there is no way that Emily would let Kenny duplicate the 70's style look with the run down flooring, appliances, and furniture made famous in the original! Since the house is not just a replica project and is actually a primary place of residence, the house has modern appliances and was decorated in more of a rustic farmhouse/Victorian inspired look …and of course with plenty of vintage Halloween décor and Horror memorabilia as accent pieces.

The Myers House North Carolina celebrated its first Halloween at the house on Saturday, October 31, 2009 to a crowd of nearly 200! The house has been featured in dozens of online, newspaper and magazine articles from local Hillsborough all the way to South Pasadena, California since its completion. Fellow HALLOWEEN fans from all over (New York, Florida, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia, etc.) have traveled to visit the NC Spookhouse - Kenny and Emily get on average around 1 group of visitors per week at the house. They also host several horror get-togethers throughout the year and plan to keep the tradition of having a big HALLOWEEN Bash on Halloween night every year.
